That’s all folks! BBC takes aim at US children’s cartoons
The BBC wants to end the dominance of American cartoons on television because they prevent British children from absorbing their own culture, a senior executive said.
The broadcaster is hoping to create Britain’s answer to The Simpsons as it pumps extra funds into animation in an attempt to win back viewers from Netflix and Disney.
Too many cartoons watched in this country are made overseas, according to Patricia Hidalgo, director of children’s and education at the BBC. She is telling producers to insert more identifiably British moments, such as roast beef dinners, into family shows.
Hidalgo cited The Amazing World of Gumball as an example. The animated series is set in a fictional Californian town despite being created in the UK.
